We provide dental care in underserved communities by developing leaders and cultivating collaborative partnerships.

Our Story

Hope Smiles was founded by Dr. Phillip Kemp in 2005 to meet unmet dental needs and provide dental students with unparalleled mentorship and experience while serving people who don’t have access to quality dental care. From the beginning, we set out to make sure that everything we do is based on empathy for people and developing deep, meaningful, long-lasting relationships through our work.
Starting in our early days, we have been in partnership with the University of Tennessee and Meharry Medical College — providing mentoring and leadership development opportunities for dental students.
In 2013, we began supporting the work that Dr. Ryan Shinska was called to. This developed into several short-term trips and eventually a long-term partnership which led to a sustainable model that we continue to build upon today.
Our mission is to restore hope and transform lives through dentistry. More importantly, through this work, we cultivate relationships, develop connections, and build communities so that people can belong to something greater than themselves.
Through our mobile outreaches, dental clinics, and leadership development programs in Uganda, we established a model where we train and develop dental professionals who provide emergent and restorative dental care that serves people who cannot access or afford high-quality dental services.
With the support of people like you, we will continue to expand our work of restoring smiles and awakening hearts.

Dr. Tatyania Moorehead

Dr. Tatyania Moorehead grew up in a military family, traveling the world before settling in Charlotte, NC, and has a passion for reaching patients who do not readily have access to dental care, both locally and
internationally.
Life has taught Dr. Moorehead that traveling to unfamiliar places always proves to be a rewarding experience and gives the opportunity to see the world from a different perspective. When traveling, her
primary focus is to provide quality treatment, but she also understands that knowledge flow is not unidirectional. For all the information and treatment she is able to share, she always looks forward to the
opportunity for the patients she is treating to teach her something as well.
Community service is at Dr. Moorehead’s core. Whether it was teaching oral hygiene at a local elementary school, sorting items at a local thrift store, or sorting food at a local food bank, Dr. Moorehead has always been eager to lend a hand. While in dental school, Dr. Moorehead volunteered to provide free dental treatment weekly at a student run dental clinic in Durham, NC. Although these nights were after being in class all day, Dr. Moorehead showed up to volunteer and had a smile on her face each and every week. Her community service efforts did not stop after dental school. More recently, Dr. Brazile and Dr. Moorehead have hosted an annual free dental day for Veterans of Charlotte, NC, and surrounding areas. They have also hosted a community health fair where patients could come and get a dental exam, meet with a Personal Trainer, and consult with a Nurse Practitioner, Pharmacist, or Optometrist.
While in dental school Drs. Moorehead and Brazile met and began serving the community together. They
Both had such a passion for serving that they decided to bring that passion back to Charlotte, NC.

Briana Brazile

There’s an undeniable connection between oral health and overall health. Poor dental hygiene can lend to heart disease, diabetes, and other systemic health problems, which often go untreated when people can’t access care. By providing free dental services, with a special focus on preventative care & education I truly believe that through the Smile Forever Foundation we can help prevent further health complications, boosting their confidence, and enhancing their quality of life.
